Disney Wonder

We were lucky enough to cruise Disney Wonder in July 2013, thought I would share the experience with you........

Well, I've just ticked another one off my bucket list. Thinking about it, probably two actually. Alaska, the great outdoors, somewhere I had always dreamed about going. When my brother who lives in Vancouver decided this Summer was the year he was to get married, it seemed the timing was perfect to coincide with a trip to Alaska, and not only that, but aboard Disney Wonder too!

.... And then the magic begins, from the moment our names were called to welcome us aboard, you know this is going to be very special. Ellie and Joe can't wait to head off for the teenage 'hangout' Vibe and make new friends. We have a good look around what is to be our new home for the next seven days. One of the first things you notice is the amount of space onboard, no queues and not packed in like sardines. The ship has a lovely flow and makes her so easy to get around. The lobby Atrium is more akin to a deluxe art deco hotel than a ship. The beautiful large round windows not only make her so light and airy, but are also fantastic to sit in and watch the world go by. I loved the design of our outside cabin, two separate toilets, what a great idea, especially when you have two teenagers! The adult only areas of the ship were so well thought out, from the Route 66 Cadillac Lounge to have a last night cap and listen to the jazz/blues, to the adult only pool, Quiet Cove, which was more akin to a 5* ship.

What can I say about the entertainment, we saw all of the shows including 'The Golden Mickeys', 'Dreams', and my favourite 'Toy Story', all done to Disney perfection of course! We were also spoilt for Disney movies and were upon the first to see Monsters University.

The crew were always so helpful and friendly without being cheesy or forced. Our waiters in particular who looked after us so well night after night in our different restaurants (another first, rotational dining and so well organised!). And then there's the food .... always delicious and imaginative, and always so hard to choose!!

Alaska itself was something else, we were lucky with the weather though and 84 degrees and sunny on our first sailing day only highlighted the sheer beauty of the dramatic scenery.

The sights of nearing Tracy Arm, with icebergs starting only small and then becoming larger and larger the closer we got, will stay with me forever. Skagway with its quaint shops remind you of a by gone age and was a great place for us to visit the Yukon and also try our hand at gold panning!

On to Juneau, up the Mount Roberts Tramway for a bit of hiking, and lucky enough to see bald eagles and a family of marmots. The most amazing views looking down on the Disney Wonder.

Next, and our last stop Ketchikan, again the weather is on our side and a small shower lasting 10 minutes (it rains 320 days a year here). Just a stones throw from the ship we come to Creek Street, with lovely little wooden shops on stilts, and lucky enough to see a couple of sea lions playing in the water below, what a sight! We carry on walking up to 'Married Mans Trail' and see hundreds of salmon bounding up stream against all the odds.

I can honestly say this was a holiday of a life time, in short, do dreams come true, well I certainly think so!
