As of recently, solo travelling has become more accessible thanks to extensive holiday packages and plenty of transport options that are available. With cruising heading towards the forefront of affordable travel, it only seems right that solo cruisers can receive the same additional benefits that couples have access too.
Certain cruise lines cater to solos very well, offering special deals including reduced fares that feature no single supplements or cabin types that are specifically for those travelling on their own. Large companies such as Norwegian Cruise Line have even opened designated areas for solo cruisers so that they can meet passengers in the same boat – literally.
Every traveller has their own preferences when it comes to exploring each port of call. Whether you prefer the hustle and bustle of city streets, tasting top food in small-town restaurants or hunting down those memorable historic gems, you can choose to see the world at your own pace. Even if you are planning to head out on your own adventure, you are likely to meet other like-minded cruisers who are exploring on the same journey.
Otherwise, you can just join in with the fun. There will be a variety of options to seek the best of each city, with cruise director’s on-hand to point out the shore excursion best suited to you.
The main misconception of solo dining is that you will have to dine alone whilst everybody else is chatting away, but, fortunately, this is untrue. During the booking process, every solo cruiser will be given the option to join a larger table (usually between six and 10 people) that will be filled with other like-minded cruisers. This is a great opportunity to meet others that you can explore the world with, starting as complete strangers and possibly becoming life-long friends.
As always, you can still expect the high-end service that you would see at any top hotel and food to rival the best restaurants from around the world.
As the main concern for all solo travellers, getting bored on board is always a daunting prospect. You will be happy to know that with many top cruise lines hosting numerous shows, fun-filled activities and an abundance of quiet spaces, finding your own tranquil area or jumping into the action is never too far away. Add this to enrichment experiences, cookery classes and gym activities and you are sure to stay entertained between ports.
Tip: Many onboard experiences are based on a first-come, first-served basis, so make sure you book all your experiences early.
Most cruisers will know that most cabins on board come with a single supplement. This means you will have to pay an additional fee to stay within a room that can hold up to two people. However, you will be happy to know that many of the top cruise lines offer rooms with no single supplements including studio cabins and single cabins that you can find throughout most modern ships.
Otherwise, waiting for the next cruise deal is good plan of action. You might be able to take advantage of a no single supplement offer and treat yourself to a high-end cabin.
