I used to live in Vancouver and absolutely love this city. Here are my Top 10 things to do if you get the chance to visit.
Stanley Park
This is recognised as one of the greatest urban parks in the world! You can walk, run, cycle or roller blade around the park and its impressive 5mile Seawall or take a leisurely horse drawn carriage ride if you prefer. Here you will find Canada’s largest aquarium, First Nations art and Totem Poles, Lost Lagoon, lovely beaches and even a park, waterpark and miniature railway for the kids. A peaceful escape from city life and loved by tourists and locals alike – and keep a look out for the pesky raccoons that will help you eat your lunch!
Granville Island
Once home to factories, plants and sawmills, today this is a must see when visiting Vancouver, offering something for everyone. Take a stroll around the public market with its endless stalls of wonderful produce and lively vendors, sample the local beer and enjoy wonderful views across to the city, grab a coffee and watch the street performers and a must for families is the Kids Market with stores and exhibits tailored for the young (and young at heart) and you must go with an appetite as there are over 70 places to eat.
Dr Sun Yat-Sen Classical Garden
This is a truly peaceful oasis amid the vibrant neighbourhood of Chinatown. It’s time to relax, reflect and enjoy this beautiful garden with its asymmetrical arrangement of rocks and plants, the tranquil waters, the winding paths which lead to beautiful views over the courtyard - and you must sip a cup of steaming Chinese tea before you return to the real world.
Aquabus
Take a rainbow-coloured Aquabus as it travels around False Creek providing you with a front row seat to enjoy Vancouver’s spectacular waterfront scenery visiting all the major destinations in the False Creek area; including Granville Island, Science World, Yaletown and David Lam Park. You can use this unique method of transport as a regular ferry service to these attractions or take a 25-minute mini-cruise of False Creek.
Lonsdale Quay Market
Located on the North Shore, Lonsdale Quay features a fresh food market, a mouth-watering international food court, speciality arts and craft stands and local designer shops but the best part of this waterfront market is the stunning view of Vancouver – a real must is to take the SeaBus back to Canada Place, sit back and emerge yourself in this beautiful city.
English Bay
Vancouver is surrounded in beautiful beaches, but a favourite is English Bay. Located in the West End and close to Downtown this is a perfect spot to walk along the seafront, play with the kids on the beach or sit and watch he world go by and enjoy the uninterrupted views out to sea. A personal highlight is to visit Milestone’s restaurant for the Original Bellini and watch the sunset.
Capilano Suspension Bridge Park
One of the most exciting things to do in Vancouver – a blend of adventure, history and culture as you cross the swinging suspension bridge stretching 450 feet (137m) across and 230 feet (70m) above the Capilano River or take the Cliff Walk a cantilevered walkway across the cliff face or try Treetops Adventure a series of suspension bridges giving a squirrel’s view of the rainforest.
Grouse Mountain
The Peak of Vancouver and beautiful no matter what the time of year. Take the cable car to the top of the mountain (look out for bears below you) and take a moment to take in the atmosphere and scenery. In the winter try skiing, snow shoeing, ice-skating or zip lining and in the summer enjoy hiking. Alternatively, enjoy sleigh rides, the shops and restaurants and Theatre in the Sky.
Gas Town
This is Vancouver’s oldest neighbourhood, mixing old and new, in its eclectic mix of history, culture, food and fashion. Hear the story of Gassy Jack, browse the many art galleries and boutique style shops, listen to the whistle of the Steam Clock, enjoy pasta in an original Trolley car at The Old Spaghetti Factory or sample local craft beer in Steamworks.
Robson Street
This is the epicentre of downtown Vancouver’s shopping district and offers a great café culture as you relax and take part in a popular local pastime of people watching. There is a huge range of well-known internationally branded stores along with an array of places to eat and drink - try the burgers or wicked hot wings in Red Robin or enjoy a cocktail or fine dining in Cloud 9’s revolving restaurant and lounge with impressive views over the whole city.
